Pre Advanced Spanish

Tuesdays, March 28-June 6, 9 weeks (no class April 11 and April 18 due to Passover)

From the outset of the course, students should initiate, maintain, and close conversations on familiar topics and sometimes interact in a culturally appropriate manner using context. They should also be able to state opinions on topics of personal interest. Their narrations, descriptions and discussions from reading-comprehension are characterized by using compound sentences, with the most accuracy in the present, past and future tense. Students should understand and use vocabulary from familiar thematic word groups and furthermore, should make pronunciation and intonation comprehensible to an audience accustomed to interacting with language learners

Advanced Spanish II

Students will continue to review and expand the basic structures of Spanish with special emphasis on more difficult grammatical aspects, develop more formal vocabulary, and further improve both oral and written skills. Students will broaden their understanding of several aspects of Hispanic culture and literature via movies and written texts. Four key components that will assist students to attain these goals are grammar, vocabulary, language awareness, and practice/participation.

Senior Prom Hawaiian Paradise

Hula on over to the paradise that awaits us as we adventure into the depths of island life: coral reefs, exotic dancers, and surfs up on this pleasant journey to the tropics. No plane tickets needed; just don your best Hawaiian shirt and grass skirt and surf on over to the JCC for some dancing, entertainment, food and prizes. TEEN TECHNOLOGY TUTORS FOR SENIORS

Thursdays, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Who do you turn to when you have questions about your computer and/or smartphone? Your grandkids? Never fear if they’re not here, we have teens for you! Whether you want to make font sizes larger on your screen and phone, establish a Skype or Facebook account, learn word processing tips, set up email, take photos with your phone, or whatever, come learn from the younger generation how it is done on your device!

This free service is a collaboration between the JCC Senior & Teen Departments, the JCC's Teen Leadership Council, and Camp Jaycee CITs.

Stretch for Flexibility

Tuesdays/Thursdays, 9:15 - 10:10 A.M.

Reduce tension in your body by elongating your muscles. This class combines a variety of stretching techniques to open up your body. Adding stretching to your life will prevent muscular strain, tearing, and general soreness. Wear comfy clothes. JCC provides mats if you don't have one.

The following classes are held at the Lawrence Family JCC.

Spring Semester: February 1-June 8, 2017 (no classes Feb. 20 for Presidents' Day and May 29 for Memorial Day)
Spring break: March 27-April 1, 2017

Figure & Still Life Drawing (Painting for Spring Semester)

Study line, mass, proportion and value, space and composition using a variety of pencils, charcoal & brush.
Note: Spring Semester will be Figure & Still Life Painting with Watercolors (starting February 6)

Explore your musical talent through learning the fundamentals of piano techniques, musical expression and styles, theory and ear training, recital preparation and experience.

Watercolor Painting

Law and the Retiree/Current Events

Lively discussion lead by attorney/former newscaster on contemporary topics of interest to seniors, including: healthcare and news regarding Social Security and Medicare, new laws and proposals for changes (including taxes and estate planning), foreign affairs (including Israel), future elections and ballot propositions, and recent court decisions of interest to seniors, to name but a few of the hot topics we will have fun to explore in this class with our neutral moderator.


Sumi-E Japanese Brush Painting

Learn Japanese brush painting, develop Zenga and spontaneity with flowers, animals, and more.


Online Music & Opera Appreciation

Wednesday, February 1, 4:30-7:30 P.M. (meets one time for registration & orientation)

Online music course explores background of composers, their times and compositions from late Baroque to early Romantic periods. Enhance your enjoyment of the S.D. Opera and Met HD productions by better understanding each opera, its background, musical particulars, composer and times. Includes listening to samples and weekly online sessions. Meet for registration for one or both classes and learn how to navigate and continue in your own home at your own pace.
